We will start our trip at the Des Moines Downtown Farmers Market. The Market supports nearly 300 entrepreneurial vendors from 50 Iowa counties. It offers diverse products including locally-grown produce, seasonal flowers, farm fresh eggs and cheese, locally-produced wine and fresh baked goods. You will also find Iowa-raised meat including beef, pork, chicken, turkey, goat, rabbit, lamb and tilapia. The Market spans nine city blocks and includes ready-to-eat foods, local artists, live music and entertainment.
The bus will stop for lunch at The Machine Shed which is dedicated to the American Farmer. That dedication resulted in a restaurant that wasn’t just “farm themed” but something that farmers could be proud of.
The final stop will be at the Iowa Distilling Company in Cumming, IA for a tour and tasting. The company is located in a 100-year old brick building in Cumming, IA. Their aim is to bring distilling back to its roots on the farm. They know the farmers who grow their grain and the people at the local farmers’ co-op who helps them load it onto their truck. Distilling was once a normal part of farming grain and they are happy to carry on the tradition. Some of their products are Straight Bourbon Whiskey, Zone Vodka, Steel Drum Rum and much more.
